Rhodiola Best Herb For ADD/ADHD

Talk about flying under the radar, Rhodiola Rosea (Golden Root) is probably one of the best kept secrets that has been bestowed upon ADD/ADHD. This has been one of the hardest herbs to research. I have gone through over 50 something health books last week with little info available. Most herbal remedy books didn’t even have this herb listed. And for the ones that did, they only offered basic info; where it is commonly found and it’s health benefit. No dosage, no side effects, etc…. The internet offered more information but I wanted more details about side effects, dosages for athletes, how often it is cycled, etc. Had this herb not been recommend to me by a mom who has a child with ADHD, I would have missed out on its magic wonders! Her son was failing. She had ordinary tried Rhodiola at 100mg with no success. But as one last attempt she tried this herb again but this time at 200mg. Her son began to show improvements. In fact his teacher sent an e-mail amazed at the difference in him.

Ginseng and Ginkgo Biloba are two popular herbs that seem to get all the credit in this country. But in other parts of the world Rhodiola is known as one of the most powerful adaptogen around today that posses an extraordinary combination of health benefits WITHOUT serious side effects. Because this herb is grown in harsh sub-arctic climates and high altitudes of Siberia, it has learned to adapt to unfavorable conditions in order to survive. When we take this herb our bodies will also have the ability to adapt to stressful, chemical, and psychological conditions in our environment.

This herb benefits ADD/ADHD:

1. It improves attention span

2. Increases circulation to the brain

3. Fights depression and emotional stress

4. Stimulate dopamine/serotonin production

5. Improves cognitive skills

6. Enhances mental work capacity

7. Heightens the body’s resistance to stressors such as too much motor activity (hyperactivity-ADHD)

What You Need To Know About Rhodiola:

1. It does not build up in your body like other herbs so it keeps side effects to a minimum.

2. You can take up to 20 times the recommended dosage (kids 50mg adults 100-200mg) without severe side effects…..HOWEVER, people with a sensitive nervous system need VERRRY small amounts or should start off on this herb on a small amount first and build up to a recommended dosage. Some individuals reported that they became moody and couldn’t sleep for days just from one dosage. Others individuals suggested to take in the morning and not in the afternoon if you want to get any sleep.

* As long as you stay under 800mg a day you should be okay.

3. Mix reviews from the internet but all the herbs book I’ve been checking out in the book store suggest to cycle this herb because taking it everyday will cause it to lose it’s potency. I like the 5 days on 2 days off or 5 weeks on 2 weeks off. Some say 4 days on 3 days off, etc.. but this cycle was recommended to me by a Biochemist at NC State.

4. Most ADHD are great athletes. This herb will benefit them because it enhances cardiovascular, maintains energy levels, improving both endurance and protein metabolism.

5. When used for depression it is given at higher dosage 340mg-680mg. It’s known as a natural anti-depressant. Plus it can be taken with depression medication. It is not an MAO inhibitor. HOWEVER, should not be taken for manic or bi-polar. I’m guessing it’s because of their sensitive nervous system.

6. Many ADD/ADHD have food sensitivities or allergies making them more sensitive to this herb. So make sure you start at 50mg and slowly work your way up to 100-200mg.

7. Children who mimic ADD/ADHD symptoms because of faulty glucose levels and thyroid issues, will greatly benefit from this herb because it helps balance and regulate their hormones. Just know if ONE hormone in your body is out of whack, then it will throw the rest of your hormones out of sync too. It also regulates adrenal glands and controls cortisol levels.

8. When purchasing Rhodiola you are looking for the 2 primary active ingredients phenylpropanoids of Rosavin (3%) and Salidroside (1%) ratio. If you can find anything higher …..order it!

9. Stay away from Chinese Rhodiola because Russian Rhodiola is 3 times stronger.

10. Best taken 30 mins before meal but I did find info on the internet that said you could take with or without food.

Charlie started on this herb last Saturday. He took 1 cap (100mg) with his vitamins. He ate breakfast 30 mins later. He had to help clean up a yard with his church group. He didn’t really notice any focus BUT he said he never got tired once working in the yard while everyone else was taking breaks. Monday I gave him 2 caps (200mg) with his neurotransmitters. I was too nervous to stop something that has been working on a school day. Anyway, after school he said he noticed that he had a little bit more focus. Charlie no longer has focus issues but he’s very in tune to his body because his mama is always doing experiments ;). I asked for more specific situations. He said when he was taking notes from the board he didn’t have to look up as many times. BUT what he noticed the most was during PE, his stamina and endurance switch was flipped ON! He already has plenty of energy from his supplements so I asked him, “Do you mean it gives you more energy?” And he’s said, “No, but it keeps me feeling like I never get tired while we’re playing basketball.” Tuesday Charlie took 2 caps with his vitamins and this time no Neu-becalm (neurotransmitters). He told me after school that his focus felt “enhanced.” I said what do you mean exactly. He’s said, “Okay out of 1 to 5, my focus is usually a 4 but today it felt like a 5. I’m not doing anything faster but I do feel like I’m thinking clearer.” His report on this herb for the rest of the school week has been consistent. I asked him, “Do you want to keep taking this herb or do you feel like it’s worth taking during the school week?” He said, “This is my favorite herb that you have given me so far and I want to keep taking it.” I will continue to keep him at 2 caps during the week and during the weekend he will not take Rhodiola and go back on his neurotransmitter supplements. I’m curious to see how this herb plays out long term and the results it will have on other ADD/ADHD children/adults that I have asked to participate in this experiment. And whatever Charlie takes, me and my husband ALWAYS take as well to help Charlie understand what he is experiencing. I felt like 1 cap of a 100mg was PLENTY for me! Don’t want to say I felt jittery but I was a tiny bit restless….in a good productive way. It never interfered with my sleep. However my husband who has ADHD started Monday with me and he’s up to 2 caps. He hasn’t really notice anything yet but he’s a tough one. He’s always my ultimate test. Maybe he needs a higher dosage and a longer duration on this herb to see results.

Here are two Rhodiola products I like so far:

1. https://www.emersonecologics.com/Products/EmersonMain/PID-RHOD5.aspx This product at (180 caps @ 27.80) 3% Rosavin and 1% salidrosides.

2. This product has a high % of Rosavin and salidrosides (5.4-6.6%)  http://www.nationaldiscountvitamins.com/details.cfm?Group_ID=29&Product_ID=4784 (60 caps @$19.96) So far it has ranked as one of the highest. I ordered this product.

Benefits of Calcium/Magnesium for ADD/ADHD

Okay for me, Cal/Mag is one of the best products on the Biometics product line for ADD/ADHD. Calcium is one of the MOST IMPORTANT minerals for your body and 80% of Americas are deficient in both Calcium and Magnesium (which is where most health problems stem from) especially ADD/ADHD. You must keep in mind that ADHD are HIGHLY deficient in Cal/Mag and needs almost 2 servings daily until their body has regain balance. Plus when magnesium (known as the anti-stress mineral) is combined with calcium, it works as a natural tranquilizer. Without magnesium you would not be able to hold the calcium in your body no matter how much your daily calcium intake.

So let’s go over the benefits of Magnesium and Calcium and how it affects ADD/ADHD:

Magnesium helps fight depression, boost energy, helps burn fat, prevents heart attacks, maintains good cholesterol levels, aid indigestion, combats PMS symptoms,  helps prevent premature labor, and keeps teeth strong and healthy.

Calcium‘s MajorRoles:

1. Stored in the bones. This is very important for ages of children from 9-19yrs (who need 1300mg of calcium), lactating mothers (1500mg), and anyone over 50yrs (1300-1500mg)

2. It is responsible for all muscle contractions in your body including your heart! This product is great for Restless leg Syndrome, menstrual cycle, migraines, athletes, and has a relaxing and calming effect.

3. It circulates in your blood stream and does MANY benefits:   a. Helps your Metabolism (dictates how much weight your body stores or burns off)  b. Regulates your hormones (especially Menopause!)

  c. Helps with the elasticity of your arteries (Blood Pressure)

  d. Aids with digestion enzyme activity (helps your body break down food-important for ADHD)

  e. Helps your body absorb B12 properly (important for ADD/ADHD)

  f. Helps with neurotransmitter release (which is important for ADD/ADHD and also helps calm ADHD with their hyperactivity)

  g. Blood Coagulation (needed in many phases for blood clotting)

  h. Helps Nerve impulses (important for ADD/ADHD)

  i. Helps neutralize an Acidic pH (important for ADD/ADHD) Acidic pH causes fungus, mold, parasites, bad bacteria (Candida), and viral infections that all thrive in your body due to lack of oxygen.  Basically your body becomes a play ground for diseases especially cancer!

99% of your Calcium is stored in your bones which leaves 1% to be used in your blood stream and muscles. When you are calcium deficient your body will have to pull the it from your bones and muscles so it can utilize it in your blood stream to neutralize acid. Remember that the next time you decide to give a child with ADD/ADHD sodas, junk foods, fried food, sugary food, etc that you are creating an acidic pH in their body.

FYI: Calcium citrate absorbs 2.5 times faster than Carbonate. Calcium Carbonate is more absorbable than most other types of Calcium, and if the Citrate form is not available, the Carbonate form is fine. However, there are some types of Calcium supplements that are not recommended at all:  those that have bone meal, oyster shell, or dolomite as their source of Calcium. Regardless of how inexpensive they may be, these sources of Calcium are not good choices because they may contain high levels of lead.

BIOMETICS’ CAL/MAG 100 contains 100% of the US Daily Values of Calcium, and  50% of Vitamin D. When added to water, the Calcium in CAL/MAG 100 undergoes a carbonation reaction, which converts Calcium Carbonate to Calcium Citrate, the most absorbable form of calcium,  to enhance skeletal and other body systems. *

Folic Acid helps with Memory

So how does Folic Acid affect ADD/ADHD? Well, like many of the B vitamins, Folic Acid affects mental function. It helps serotonin production (very important for ADD/ADHD-it’s the “mood” neurotransmitter) by elevating mood and can even act as a mild antidepressant. However, it takes extremely large dosesup to 50 mg — to get results. Plus a certain amount of memory loss seems to go along with age and this could be slowed by taking folic acid supplements, because it lowers levels of homocysteine. Although folic acid is found naturally in legumes, carrots, artichokes, cantaloupe, avocados, apricots, beans, lentils, soybeans, garbonzos, barley, whole wheat, dark green leafy vegetables, and in some cereal grains, taking a multivitamin or a B-complex vitamin is the best way to ensure you get enough Folic Acid each day. It’s a water soluble vitamin so the body does not store what it doesn’t use. The US Daily Value is 400mcg per day for most individuals, and 800mcg for women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. Remember, the US Daily Allowance is the mininum amount an idividual needs to take daily. Biometics Bio Fuel and Get-Go-N both contain 400mcg of Folic Acid.

TIP: When you look at high quality multi-vitamin supplements, make sure you select a product that list folate versus folic acid. Folate means that it is a natural form of Folic Acid. If it says Folic acid on the label this means it is the synthetic type.

How Much Biometics Get-Go-n Can Be Given To My Son For His ADHD In One Day?

Q: I have been taking the AM/PM program with my son for his ADHD for the last 2 weeks. How much of Biometics’ Get-Go-N can both of us take in one day? Right now he’s at 4 scoops and doing great in the mornings, but around 2-3pm he becomes restless and starts having problems focusing again. I’m only taking 2 scoops in my drink each morning. I do not have ADHD so can I take more through out the day or is 2 scoops enough?

A: Your son can take a total of 6-8 scoops of Get-go-n in one day but don’t do it all in one serving. It will depend on your son on the serving amount that he needs daily. You have to remember that ADD/ADHD are deficient in EVERYTHING plus whenever they are using their brains (strenuous mental activities) they burn through their B vitamins quickly! For ADD/ADHD, they only need 4 scoops in their AM drink. When Charlie first started on Biometics, he took 4 scoops in the morning, 1 scoop and 1/2 tbsp of Bio Alert at school (right before lunch), and 1-2 scoops when he got home from school. He was 11years old back then. Charlie is about to turn 15 years old in December. He only takes 4 scoop of Get-Go-N in the morning now. I always thought as he got bigger he would need more Get-go-n but as his body and brain chemistry started to become balance he really doesn’t need as much anymore. When Charlie was younger, he knew the minute he burned through his B vitamins and neurotransmitters. He would come to me and ask if he could have another scoop so he could focus on his homework. We kept his vitamins at the nurse’s office so he could stop by in between his classes. All of his teachers would allow him to go to the nurses office at Charlie’s request. It was never a problem or an issue that we kept Bio Alert and Get-Go-N at school. Charlie is in all advance honor classes. On some days he will burn through his vitamins quickly and on laid back days at school he doesn’t need more Get-Go-N. It all depends on him. But rarely does he take an extra serving of Bio Alert or Get-go-n unless he has multiple test to study for that night.Your fine at 2 scoops in your morning drink. But for the days you are active, stressed, or using your brain for strenuous mental activities, you too are burning through your vitamins quickly. So if you are having a busy day with paperwork or need to pull an all nighter to meet your dead line you can take another 1-2 scoops of Get-Go-N and 1/2 tbsp Bio Alert. Even if you are taking a road trip and you want to drive all night, Get-go-n is a great alternative instead of drinking coffee or Red Bull all night long so you can to stay up and be focus. You will find that when you wake up the next morning you do not feel all drugged like you would from drinking coffee all night long. Plus it’s so much better for you.

1. Even if your child is ADD/ADHD, you should ALWAYS start at 1/2 or 1 scoop Get-Go-N and slowly build up to 4 scoops. Charlie could start instantly at 4 scoops but for other children/adults who have sensitive stomachs, you will have to slowly introduce this product into your system or you will end up with a tummy ache or diarrhea.

2. I wouldn’t take Get-go-n past 4pm or you might be Getty up and going with cleaning your house all night long. And when you are taking an extra serving of Get-Go-N, always start with a 1/2 scoop and build up to see what is the best serving size for your body. You may find that the extra serving of 1/2 scoop around 2 pm is all you need to have long lasting energy through out your entire day.

3. Make sure you drink plenty of water!!!!!

4. Don’t freak out if you turn red or get hot and itchy. This is a flush and it’s verrry good for you! Think of it as a cleansing, it’s your body’s way of ridding itself from toxins.

5. Bio Alert and Get-Go-n are great to take before participating in sports because they not only help with increase energy and focus but they also increase eye and hand coordination.

Could You Please Tell Me How To Purchase The Supplements In Your E-book As A Natural Remedy For ADD/ADHD?

Q: Your e-book didn’t tell me what kind of vitamins and food you bought for your son.  Do I have to order it?  I’ve tried everything and he is still failing school.  I’m weaning him off his medicine and trying a vitamin called sea essentials and taking away the sugar.  Could you please tell me what else to do.  Did you buy certain vitamins from a store – just tell me how you did it, I’m at my whits end and I love my son too much to see him like this.

A: The vitamins I recommend are different from supplements on the market today. These guys are POWERFUL!!!!! Biometics has a patent process that allows your son to get 85-100% absorption. All of the fat soluble vitamins have been converted into water soluble so there is no toxin build up either. Plus I have recommend a program (Biometics AM/PM Program) and not just one type of supplement for ADD/ADHD. These children and adults are deficient in many of their vitamins, minerals, neurotransmitters, etc. So a mult-vitamin nor a B vitamin supplement are not enough for ADD/ADHD. They will need everything! The will even need mega doses on certain supplements from Biometics. You can not buy the vitamins at a store. You will have to purchase them on line. I have a WONDERFUL soul that you can contact at Biometics. She has gained control of her son’s ADD by using natural remedies. You will need to speak or e-mail her to make sure you give the right amount of vitamins to your son daily. There will be a lot of adjusting before you find what works for his body. She will help you through this.

Rae Ann’s e-mail: hayneskr@cox.net Her phone number (850) 650-8147 H and (850) 259-4887. This is what she does and she is terrific!!! She has helped many parent’s children and adults that have ADD/ADHD start this supplement regimen with positive results!

As far as diet, I have switched Charlie to everything organic. I have pulled everything from his diet that I have listed in my e-book (dairy, MSG, high fructose corn syrup, sodas, trans fat, hydrogenated oils, fried foods, etc). This week I will start posting easy organic recipes on my Blog so make sure you check it daily.
